Mentoring Moves Mountains Program

Mentoring is a process where someone with training and pastoral care skills becomes a companion on your life journey. You and that person decide what you will talk about and how often you will get together. The mentor will provide a ‘listening ear’ and a non-judgmental way of listening to your concerns. She or he will not have answers, but will help you move through your decisions, be a good support and help you even develop some goals or ideas of how to achieve some of your dreams. And it’s an excellent chance for you to get to know yourself and other people in the community of the Carlington Community Chaplaincy. All of us need good mentors in our lives. Paying attention to how we make decisions and move forward with goals is one of the best things we can do to take good care of ourselves.

Goals for the Mentoring Program

  • We will support participants in the development of a set of skills that will allow them to set short-term goals for self-growth in relation to emotional, physical, cultural, spiritual and personal needs in identified areas.
  • We will nourish participants in the development of a positive self-image, grounding self-confidence and community involvement through involvement in learning opportunities relating to parenting skills, social development, budgeting, and crisis management. These opportunities will be set within an individual and communal context of living.
  • We will help participants to speak to specific needs they have around literacy development for studies and employment as well as self-advocacy skills in relation to housing, conflict situations and other daily issues.

Activities of the Mentoring program will include :

  • Stress and anger management
  • One-on-one support
  • Personal visits
  • Outings
  • Drumming
  • Budget support
  • Cooking

But we are not limited to these ideas!

We want to hear from you! What would you like to see or what gifts do you bring to the Mentoring program?

Ways you can Help

  • Become involved in the program
  • Suggest activities for the program
  • Tell friends whom you think could use a mentor

Are you interested in being mentored?

Being mentored by someone means:

  • Having one-on-one support
  • Doing fun activities with others
  • Building up your skills and thinking of your future
  • Having someone to support you and your dreams

Do you want to get involved as a Mentor?

Are you interested in becoming a mentor? We want to invite people from our supporting churches and from the wider community to come and be part of the program as mentors for people in the community. We will provide training and ongoing support. There will be opportunities to form a one-on-one relationship with people and also get involved in activities of the Mentoring program. If you are a wonderful listener and want to get to know and support people, this is a program for you!
